Take a few steps outside and you are likely to find a bevy of cheap things to do in San Diego. One of the best ways to get some exercise and enjoy San Diego’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean is by going open water swimming.
The La Jolla Cove Swim Club is home to numerous local swimmers of varying abilities. Some of its members are content to enter the Pacific at La Jolla Cove and swim out to the buoys and back while others are training for more ambitious accomplishments like swimming across the English Channel or training for a triathlon. No worries if you don’t have such lofty goals, you can still have a great time joining up with other swimmers to swim out to the buoys or from the Cove to La Jolla Shores. During these swims not only will you get a good workout, but if you keep an eye out you might spot sea lions, seals, garibaldi, leopard sharks, and more. All you need to enjoy one of the greatest things to do in San Diego is a swimsuit. Of course, a swim cap could also be useful if you have long hair, and depending on the season a wetsuit could help you handle the sometimes cold waters of the Pacific. If you aren’t the strongest swimmer but would still like the experience of open water swimming, you might want to head out with some fins to make it easier to fight the tide.
Membership to the La Jolla Cove Swim Club is only $20 per year which gives you access to popular member events including the La Jolla Cove 10-Mile Relay, the Pier to Cove, and the Polar Bear Plunge. You can also register for other competitive swims, meet for social swims, and check the Facebook page to see when people are meeting at the Cove. Most days there are at least a few members meeting at the lifeguard tower at the Cove at 8:00AM for a morning swim to get the blood flowing. Open water swimming is one of the most amazing San Diego things to do that will give you a good workout and get you more in touch with the Pacific.
