If you’re feeling bored, simply head to the beach to find dozens of cheap things to do in San Diego. One of the most fun activities, which also gives you a really good workout, is playing beach volleyball. Many beaches throughout the county have poles set up for volleyball courts, and some are even available for pickup games.
Mission Beach Volleyball courts are set up at South Mission Beach and are available for pickup games every day of the week. If you are looking for some real competition and are an advanced beach volleyball player, head over on Saturday and Sunday between 8:00AM and 1:00PM, or Tuesday through Thursday from 2:00PM until sunset and you can challenge players or find teammates of a similar skill set. If you are still learning the game you can hit the courts at other times, although you may be able to find open courts for you and some friends during those times as well. What makes beach volleyball special, and one of the best things to do in San Diego, is that you can dive on the sand without fear of injury and when you get too hot and sweaty you can easily cool off in the ocean. Remember to warm up and stretch beforehand to avoid injury and apply sunscreen before you begin and between games every once in a while to avoid sunburn.
You can find beach volleyball rules on the Mission Beach Volleyball website so you know hot to score and what constitutes a point before you head to the courts. While Mission Beach is one of the most popular volleyball courts in the county, you can also find poles set up for courts in Ocean Beach, Del Mar, Coronado, and more. However, at many of these places, in addition to bringing your own ball, you will also need to bring a net. Spending time at the beach playing volleyball and soaking up some rays is far and away one of the top San Diego things to do.
Funbassadors who have some volleyball experience along with a net and some balls can set up a FunGig that either provides beach volleyball lessons or gives a Funseeker an experienced partner to challenge others at the courts. Funseekers who don’t have volleyball experience can purchase a FunGig that will teach them how to bump, set, and spike and let them get in a few games of this fun sport.
