Lovers of history have plenty of choices when looking for things to do in San Diego, but many don’t want to spend a gorgeous Southern California day inside a museum. The best way to get outside, enjoy some stunning views, and learn some history is by visiting the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
Located just north of downtown on the San Diego harbor, the Maritime Museum of San Diego has an extraordinary collection of sea-faring vessels that includes five ships, two submarines, and more. The main attraction is the Star of India, which is the world’s oldest active ship and a San Diego landmark that you can’t miss when walking or driving along Harbor Drive just west of Little Italy. Another popular attraction is the HMS Surprise which was featured in two hit movies, Master and Commander, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The other vessels on display at the Maritime Museum are the America, a B-39 submarine, the Californian, a PCF 816 swift boat, a San Diego Harbor pilot boat, the San Salvador, the Steam Ferry Berkeley, the Steam Yacht Medea, and the USS Dolphin. The ships feature several hands on exhibits that are fun for kids and adults alike and occasionally costumed characters dressed as pirates who add to the experience. Spending time by the bay while learning about maritime history is definitely one of the favorite San Diego things to do.
Tickets to the museum start at $18 and the museum is open from 9:00AM to 9:00PM daily. In addition to being open to the public, the Maritime Museum of San Diego also features special ticketed events like their Craft Beer Festival and the Festival of Sail which takes place at the end of the summer and lets those with tickets watch their historic ships set sail in the harbor and possibly even board them and go for a ride. People looking for fun things to do in San Diego today should definitely consider a visit to the Maritime Museum.
Funbassadors can arrange for a trip to the Maritime Museum and even pair it with a trip to a nearby restaurant like Carnita’s Snack Shack or Kansas City BBQ which was featured in the movie Top Gun. Funseekers have the chance to purchase a FunGig that gets them onboard some of the most historic ships ever to sail into the San Diego Harbor.
